How SyncWords - a New York Startup - is Disrupting Live Video Streaming with AI Captioning and Voice Translations

As a New York-based entrepreneur, I've always been passionate about building solutions that bridge communication gaps. And there’s no better place than New York to make it happen. This passion led me and my co-founders, Sam Cartsos and Alex Dubinsky, down the path of video streaming. We met in a loft office space in Long Island City and instantly clicked over our shared interest in technology, language and accessibility. We saw the power of video to educate, engage, and inform, but we also recognized a significant barrier in video streaming: language. The three co-founders hail from different countries and backgrounds - India, Greece and Ukraine - and therefore, solving the language barrier in live video streaming became a mission which was core to the company.

The Language Barrier in Training and Beyond

Imagine an employee onboarding video packed with valuable information, yet delivered in a language the viewer doesn't fully understand. Studies show a dramatic drop in knowledge retention in such scenarios. This issue extends far beyond training. Live events, conferences, and even news and sports broadcasts – all lose their impact when viewers struggle with the language. With over 200 billion hours of live streaming taking place annually, only a small fraction includes live subtitles or voice translations – dubs. Over 10% of the world’s population is deaf or hard-of-hearing, and over 80% of the global population do not understand English very well, and hence we have a problem. Furthermore, countries like the United States, Canada, Australia, and those in the European Union are mandating video accessibility.

Pivoting to Live Video Localization

We started SyncWords with a focus on captions and subtitles for pre-recorded videos. But the pre-recorded (video-on-demand) market was crowded with many companies. However, a nagging problem persisted: the lack of a seamless solution for live video. Live streaming is booming, yet there are no established players offering accurate real-time subtitles and dubs embedded directly within the video player. This underserved market became our target opportunity. We have raised US $2 million in seed funding, and are well on our way to make our vision a reality offering subtitles and dubs (AI voice translations) in over 100 languages.
